The show is a celebration of black skin, in all its diversity. There are more than 20 performers on stage, taking turns in numbers of humour, dance, music, acrobatics and juggling.

It is a way of bringing each performer into focus, with their attributes and individualities, explains director Ricardo Rodrigues. “‘Prot{ago}nists’ is plural because each artist has their moment to star, to be the protagonist. This was a premise of ours, to get around the lack of space that is given to black people.”

“Àgò”, a Yoruba word highlighted between braces in the title, is a request for permission to take up the stage and give way to this narrative. The scenes explore social problems, such as police violence or black loneliness, but also praise the diversity and festivities of these cultures. “For us, the show is a great celebration of existence, of being alive,” says the director.

The making of this creation was recorded in the documentary “Being Alive Is Our Greatest Resistance”, which is also part of the festival’s programme.
