A common item in children’s games, the hula hoop is also an equipment often used in balancing acts during circus shows. In this course, aimed at beginners, performer Vulcanica Pokaropa teaches some tricks and manoeuvres performed with the ring.

First of all, however, she proposes a series of exercises in body awareness, stretching and simple movements with the hula hoop. This is so that the participants understand their muscles and motor coordination and realize “that it’s not necessary to know a million tricks to be able to do a number,” explains the artist.

Vulcanica, who in her work researches the relation of the hula hoop with comedy and poetry, also presents some references and discusses how to use the device to create artistically.

Vulcanica Pokaropa is a performer, poet, visual artist, cultural producer and transvestite. Graduated in Photography and Master in Theatre by Udesc (University of the State of Santa Catarina), she researches hula hoop and comicality. She is part of Cia Fundo Mundo, a circus company formed exclusively by transsexuals, transvestites and non-binary people.
