A woman’s place in the circus has not always been amidst the power acrobatics or at the bases of the human pyramids. But that has been changing. “This is a space where women thought they couldn’t be,” says Rubia Neiva, creator of Troupe Guezá, which works with the acrobatic skills of female bodies.
In this show, the group focuses on the feminine universe both in the physical work – with solo and aerial acrobatics designed for women – and in the theme. “We wanted to deal with issues that happen to all of us, subjects that are important to talk about,” continues Rubia.
Through numbers with hand to hand technique (performed only by contact between the artists, without the use of equipment), each of the acrobats presents an issue about femininity: maternity, the violence of abusive relationships and social standards of beauty and behaviour. The routines are accompanied by a soundtrack of sensations, with rumbles that recall breathing or the beating of the heart.
