A misfit clown, who is unable to follow the norms of society, ends up subverting the logic of things. He balances unusual objects, makes items disappear and swallows an unthinkable amount of napkins. Through classic clown and illusionist tricks, he seems to defy gravity.

It’s been almost 40 years since Avner Eisenberg created this show, and he has been touring the world with it ever since. Over the past decades, he has adapted some of the scenes. “In the beginning, the show was really about presenting the skills, the acrobatics. And I realized later that the relationship with the audience was the most important thing,” says the North American, now 73 years old – and still doing some acrobatics.

Known as Avner The Eccentric, the artist went through the school of the renowned French mime Jacques Lecoq, taught classes in the institution of the Italian Carlo Mazzone-Clementi and today is considered one of the greatest clowns in the world.

In his show, we don’t see the classic clown make-up or the extremely large shoes. The piece – all based in silent bits – shows the clown’s precise physical expressiveness, as well as his ability to guide the audience and interact with them. After all, says Avner, “clowning is a technique and an attitude that creates a reaction in the audience. For me, it was a liberation to put on the red nose in the beginning. But it was a bigger liberation to take it off”.
