“What type of society pays homage to those responsible for the genocide of its people?” It is with this provocation that Brazilian artist Marcos Nery opens Mito – Jogos de Recusa. A result from his doctorate research on indigenous cultures in Brazil and Canada, the show approaches important themes from these peoples: the creation myth, the relationship between the shaman and the spiritual world, between men and women, hunt and hunter, the notion of otherness and the issue of colonization.
“In this project, I was constantly challenging my convictions and myself; the work has presented me with new possibilities of how to exist in the world and on stage”, says Nery, who performs with Canadian artist Ivanie Aubin-Malo, from the Québec tribe Malecite de Viger.
